    New Ads…

    Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

    Hey there,

I just wanted to thank everyone for reading the comic… I have gotten a lot of positive feedback, which was of course very welcome.  You may have noticed, if you visited the site this weekend, that I have finally gotten the site up and running.  If you like the strip and would like to show some support I would appreciate it if you would click on one or more of the ads… having ads on the page helps me keep the content free.

    thanks

    Room with a view….

    Monday, May 5th, 2008

So the weekend is over…. and like a certain orange, lasagna loving cat…. I hate Mondays.  But Monday shouldn’t take it personal.  Cause it’s not you Monday… really it’s me… we just need some time apart.  *Sigh*  So I have an appointment with the doctor today…  My wife tells me that I have a snoring problem, but I don’t see it that way.  I think I snore pretty well, and it’s her that has the snoring problem.  Ah well…. either way.  My family doc told me that I might be a candidate for surgical correction, and so I agreed to meet with the specialist for a consult.

On a brighter note (no pun intended) I moved my home office up out of the basement this weekend.  You see at work there is no window in the section of the building where my “cubicle” is and people prefer the overhead halogen lights to be off all day…. and then I get home and my office is in the basement, with no window as well…. I got sick of spending my whole life in a cave…. the lack of sunlight was getting to me.  So now, I have a brand spanking new office upstairs with a nice big window…. and no phone jack…. *sigh*

    C’est la vie….

    Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Okay so I just got signed up for twitter…. I have been kinda skeptical of this new “thing” they call twitter.  But after listening to the halfpixel guys sell the service to Dave Kellett I decided that maybe I should give it a try.  Although the Twitter’s current location and size on my site makes it seem rather pointless….(it’s waaaay down at the bottom on the right!)  I’m going to have to try putting it somewhere else.  You know I’m sure that I’m kidding myself when I think people might actually be interested in the minutia of my day to day… nay minute to minute thoughts…. but then again…. people still play The Sims…..

    New Site Template….

    Saturday, May 24th, 2008

So I decided to install the new version of wordpress today…. also got the new Comicpress with it.  Its nice and I like the new layout… but it played havoc with my top navigation bar… so I’ll fix that sometime this week.

    Saturday…

    Saturday, May 31st, 2008

So this Friday’s comic was a tiny bit late this week and for that I am sorry. Various things conspired together to make the strip late… One of the major players was of course, the release of the new Penny Arcade Game, which I have been thoroughly enjoying. If you are a fan of either the strip or of Final Fantasy style games I would heartily recommend it to you. $20 seems more then reasonable for such an enjoyable game. Also another thing that has piqued my interest of late is the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition release… which is due out sometime this June. If you go to the Wizards of the Coast website they have a bunch of information about the release as well as a neat little promotion which involves three of my personal idols…. Scott Kurtz, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulic… these lucky dogs got the distinct pleasure of being some of the first people to get their claws on the game and run a campaign with on of WOTC’s DMs… the whole thing was recorded and will be released as a series of podcasts of the next couple of weeks. Also to go with it, Mike and Scott are drawing a comic strip to accompany the podcasts… another thing to check out if you like that kind of stuff.

Well thats all for the week… new strip on Monday.

    New Discussion Board…

    Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Hey there all.  Just wanted to make a post about the brand new discussion board that I setup yesterday.  It’s a section of the website I put aside so that anyone can post questions, comments or critics on anything they’ve seen on the site or even if they’d just like to chat about whatever.  You can reach the forum by clicking “Discussion Board” just underneath the site banner on the navigation bar or by clicking here.

    Busted Toilet….

    Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Yeah so my toilet in my en suite broke last weekend…. Sigh… luckily unlike my caricatured counterpart… I’m pretty handy with the ol’ toolbox…. I opened up the back and discovered the drain cap had come off the hinge mechanism and wouldn’t go back on….. so it was off to Canadian tire…. (to be continued)

    Google bADsense?

    Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Yeah so I got home from my anniversary trip to Niagara falls yesterday and only just got around to checking the site today…. and Lo and behold….. my ad spaces were blank…. hmmm I thought… that’s odd…. better go check the ol’ e-mail…. and BAM! there it is…. apparently Google has labeled me a “significant risk to our AdWords advertisers“… yeah…. because I’ve been going around and strong arming their advertisers… apparently I run a Web Advertising protection racket that I was not aware of…. I knew I should have paid attention to those pamphlets that my local school district was distributing…. Advertising Abuse affects 3 out of 10 adults in Canada….. I should have known I had a problem when I told my wife about the flea market in Gatineau three times in the same hour…. I guess I have a problem…

I wonder if there’s a Betty Ford for victims of advertising dependence…

Also if you are a creative type of any kind you should check out this steaming pile of bullshit that is trying to push it’s way through the American legal system….  It’s called the “Orphan Works Bill” and like I said…. it’s utter bullshit….  what this bill means is that any product that has not been officially registered as the copyright material of an individual can have it’s ownership disputed under these new laws…. meaning that if you came up with an idea that you have been working with for years but haven’t gotten around to OFFICIALLY copyright… someone (like an Intellectual Property Farm) could decide to attempt to dispute your ownership and through court procedings end up owning your work and then on top of that make you pay restitution for all the years you’ve been using that idea or those characters…..  Scary stuff…. don’t let this happen….

    New stuff in the sketchblog

so I was doodling last night and I threw some stuff up on the sketchblog…..  Enjoy!

    The colour is BACK!!!

    Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Yes thats right…. I have finally caved in to all the pressure for colour…. It’s back… Now I hope that everyone can understand that although the colour strips look alot better…. they also take alot LONGER to do… and so for now I will be reducing the updates to 2 a week…. The new update schedual will be Tuesdays and Thrusdays..  Hopefully this schedual will fill the void of all those other strips out there that are 3 a weeks…. If I find that I can get a bit ahead of schedual I may go back to 3 a week, but that remains to be seen.  So like I said last week, I recently lost my Google advertisments….  The lack of potential income has forced me to add a PayPal “Tip Jar” on the site…. The only reason I have put this up is to help fund some advertisment for the site…  hopefully with your generosity I will be able to launch the advertising campaign that I thought Google ads would end up paying for….  Also I am looking for Link echanges… If you are willing to host a link for my site on your website, I will be happy to do the same here….  Also If you can’t afford to throw a buck or two my way but still want to Support me…. Tell a friend or two about my site…. Every little bit counts….

Thanks alot everyone…. I appreciate all the support so far….

    Futurama Movie: Take two…

    Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

So I thought I should take a minute and tell everyone who hasn’t already seen it about the new Futurama movie.  The new installment is called “The Beast with a Billion Backs.”  I totally think this movie is worth watching if you are a fan of the show.  Unlike the first installment, this movie feels less like 3 episodes jammed together and more like a single movie.  It was a little strange at first, as the different pacing of the movie was definately noticeable…. well at least it was to me.  I could be a bit of a different case as I work in the animation biz and I spend a good chunk of my time reading storyboards….  Anyways like I said the pacing was new but the humor is the same stuff I fell in love with when the show was on TV.  Bottom line, it’s good, you should see it.

    Over 500 visits this month!

    Friday, June 27th, 2008

So I was checking my site traffic yeterday and I noticed that I was really close to hitting the ol’ 500 mark for the first time. I posted it on twitter but since then I’ve passed the mark. I kinda figured that it deserved a little bit of acknowledgment… since that kind of thing is entirely out of my control. So this is me officially thanking everyone who’s been visiting the site. If I trust the numbers, I have roughly 170 readers from various places around the world including Canada, the States, the UK, New Zealand, France, Italy, Argentina, Brazil and Estonia…. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

As a humor strip artist, starting a new project like this can be very difficult… And I don’t mean just time wise… although it does take quite a bit of time…. More that it is a constant internal battle with a sense that no one is reading or that your jokes aren’t funny… cause really after you’ve stared at the same joke for hours on end…. you start to wonder if it was ever that funny at all…. It’s hard to get perspective on that…. But 500 hits is telling me that I’m doing SOMETHING right…

So Thanks again to everyone who’s reading… I really appreciate your time… also I appreciate your opinions… I’m going to make a nice graphical link in the side bar so you can all e-mail me with your comments or concerns with my comic…. after all, you guys are the ones who have to read it right?

    No Comic For Thursday…

    Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Hey there loyal readers….. First of all, I am VERY sorry there is no comic today…. Inspiration for this strip didn’t strike me till late last night and I didn’t have time to finish it so I had to leave off until today…. So I thought anyway…. So after work I headed out to Barhaven, where my wife and I are looking to buy a house sometime in the next year or so…. We checked out a model home, discussed some things and finally headed home to have some dinner around 7:30 or so…. We picked up some Pizza on the way and sat down on the couch, I flicked on my Xbox for some entertainment and guess what? RED RING OF DEATH!!!! Yup that’s right… My Xbox is dead…. and I bought it used from someone who voided the warranty by removing the Microsoft sticker…. sigh so MS won’t fix it and I spent about 2 hours at some dudes house who “fixes” Xbox overheating problems…. but no luck, he couldn’t get it up and running…. So I’m out of town this weekend, (leaving tomorrow morning) and I won’t be near my Cintiq till Monday…. Again I am really sorry the strip didn’t get done on time…. I hope you all can bear with me…. I’m pretty upset about the Xbox…. It was like a close friend to me….. Worst come to worst I might pick up an Elite if I have to…. I hear they have better heatsinks…. Hope you all understand…. I’ll try to post the new strip Monday evening so you all won’t have to wait too long to read it…

Ah love that new Xbox smell

    Friday, July 18th, 2008

So the drama of the broken Xbox has come to a close…. I have lived and learned…. I learned that you should be wary of buying used technology from people on used_crap.com sites…. Voided warrenties are a bitch!  But Iike I said, the drama is over…. I broke down and bought a brand spankin new system from my friendly neighbourhood EB Games…. I thought to myself… “Well at least I can hang on to my old hard drive and stuff… and the new system will have that lovely new little HDMI port that I’ve been dieing to try out…”  So I snagged the newer version of the Xbox Arcade (used to be the core system)   YES that’s right…. even the core system comes with an HDMI port!  Ain’t that grand!  Mmmmm one cable…..  But then I found out something crappy…. the Optical Audio Out on my TV…. won’t transmit anything to my audio reciever…. So I think…. that’s not right….. and I scour the owner’s manual on how to get it working, assuring myself it’s just a setting nestled somewhere in the mirriad of menu settings for my TV…. but no luck…. As a helpful little forum I found online told me…. The Sony Grand Wega Optical output only outputs sound from a cable or satellite source……… WTF!!!  Yup…. not from the HDMI….. how dumb is that?  sigh…. anyway so on top of that I found out that you need to buy a $60 adapter to use the optical out and the HDMI at the same time…. that’s a bummer eh?  Well actually there’s a little trick you can do… you can snap the plastic cover off the end of the Xbox HD cable plug and both the HDMI and the HD output adapter will plug snuggly into the back of your Xbox and then you can have both the HDMI and Optical….. Only problem with this situation?  I bought the Core…. no HD cable….  So for now I have the TV outputting Stereo sound to the reciever and dealing with “Simulated” 5.1…. It’s not so bad….. I guess…..

Either way I am psyched to have my system up and running…. even if I don’t have any excuses for late comics now :P

The “Nap and Nosh” Bed and Breakfast….

    Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

So as some of you might already know, earlier this month my parents invited my wife and I out to Bloomfield Ontario to visit friends of theirs who have opened a beautiful bed and breakfast called the “Nap and Nosh.”

Now this actually was my first bed and breakfast experience and I have to say… If all B&Bs are that nice… I’ll be staying in them a lot more often. Now Bloomfield is a small town right next to Picton Ontario, and is known for being a wonderful wine region and a haven for artists. I have to say it is gorgeous region, and luckily we had some wonderful weather for the weekend we visited. From what I understand the Nap and Nosh has been converted from an old country home that has had a sizable addition built onto the back end of the building, and it really has maintained the comfortable home like feel. It really is a relaxing environment and I never once felt as though I was intruding on the owner’s home as the entire front half of the house has been reserved for guests’ use. However there is something that will set the Nap and Nosh apart from most people’s homes… the collection of stunning art and furniture the owners have gathered from around the world.

Sonny and Jane Stevens have been around the world and had the foresight to amass a collection of furniture from various places they lived and shipped it back to Canada. As I understand it, they have had the idea to open a B&B when they retired for quite a long time and in my opinion they have succeeded in the most amazing fashion.

Not only is the house itself beautiful, but the service itself shines. The N&N has 3 different rooms for accomidation, each with it’s own theme, as well as a “tea area” located at the top of the stairs with complementary coffee, tea and bottled water in a fridge, as well as a collection of information on the restaurants and areas of intrest in bloomfield and Picton. And last but by no means least I have to mention the food…. It is FANTASTIC!!! Jane posts the breakfast menu on the bulitin board the night before listing what will be available for breakfast the following morning. The meals are out of this world… Saturday’s breakfast consisted of Yogurt with a Rasbury Coolis, A freshly baked muffin, Sausages and an artisticly created homestyle french toast. Sunday’s meal was equally luxurious, Caramelized peaches with a yogurt sauce, a fresh croissant followed by a herb creppe wrapped omlete, drizzled with melted cheese and served with an oven roasted tomato.

Now, like I said we were lucky enough to be traveling with my parents who know Sonny and Jane very well and so we spent a decent amount of time with them and I have to say, they are some of the nicest people I have met in a VERY long time. They seem to have no end of patience and love to chat with their guests. They really have put together something special in Bloomfield and I would wholeheartedly suggest to anyone who is planning a trip to the area to see if they have an open room, cause I gaurentee that you’ll remember the experience as a great one…. Oh and by the way check out the back yard…. Sonny did all the work himself….

Check out their B&B Canada website for details and reservations : Nap and Nosh

    Community unity…

    Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

    Hey guys,

Hope everyone had a great weekend, especially my Canadian readers who were enjoying a nice 3day weekend like myself.  I’ve been recieving a tremendous response of late to the strip and I wanted to give a shout out to everybody who’s sent me kind messages… It’s a lot of fun making the strip but it really makes it worthwhile when I find out other people are enjoying it to.

So I’ve been trying to spend a little more time becoming an active member in the webcomics community.  It’s great that so many really talented artists and writers have been able to come together to help each other, promote their work and talk about some of the issues that present themselves to anyone who wants to try to make a living as an independent publisher.  Brad Guigar, Dave Kellett, Kris Staub and Scott Kurtz have to be given a special thanks for using their substantial soap box to really start bringing the community into the spotlight.  I’ve really been enjoying their “weekly” podcast on all things webcomics and I’ve found a great number of people in their forums that genuinely seem excited about the art form.  Speaking of which I have to give a big thanks to Save Hiatus for his kind words and the link he gave me in his blog…. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the support!  Check out the site, they’ve got a great strip and a bunch of awesome stuff happening on the site like post-con giveaways!  www.savehiatus.com

Anyway, I really feel like the comunity has been very welcoming and I’m excited to be here!

    Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Yeah so I just got up to read my daily webcomics, and I tweeted about this but I think it merits a blog post…. I had the weirdest dream ever last night…. I dreamed that I was in a hotel room, with my parents and my Grandparents on my Mom’s side…. which is kinda weird cause they live in India… It was one of those cheezy hotels, you know the ones that have floral print bedsheets AND wallpaper?  And in this hotel room I was on trial!!  Yes apparently it was acting as some kind of court of law… where I was being judged…. by…. my TV!  not my new TV…. that bastard ass 200lbs monstrosity that I have in the basement!  Okay so the TV was acting as a medium to transmit some kind of robo-cyber-judge guy……  And he ruled that I was to have my computer taken away!!!!  Yeah they were gonna confiscate it for something or other, which means I couldn’t do my strip!  Yeah weird eh?   The funniest part is that I woke up all upset about it….

Heh, that sure was a weird one.

    What keeps you gaming?

    Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

So over the last little while I’ve been trying to get ahead on the comic strip and unfortunately that has meant letting some of my other hobbies fall to the wayside. One of the casualties of this schedule cleansing has unfortunately been my x-box time. Although I do try to make an effort to play when I can, the time that was available to it has been severely hampered. So this weekend I thought “I should play a couple of rounds of Call of Duty 4″ and was flabbergasted as to how my skills seemed to be AWOL. Now I suppose that being a gamer is like anything else, you need to practice if you want be good at it. But it’s a little unnerving as to how quickly I lost my feel for the game. But then I thought… is it really my skills that have taken a beating…. Or is it just that I’ve fallen behind? There seem to be a lot of people out there playing every day for multiple hours a day…. why is that? It’s the same game…. the same weapons.. what keeps them interested enough to jump on day in and day out and raise their skill level to such a level? Maybe it’s the fact that other people see it….

Gaming seems to have become more and more competitive over the years. There was a time, not so long ago (or at least that’s what I tell myself) when gaming was all about the fun. If someone was really good at a certain game it was easy to enjoy that WITH them. Coop play, taking turns on the same controller was the norm. Maybe it was because there were so few head to head games available to the fill that competitive space. Now-a-days it seems like most games are all about the personal achievements. More and more are focusing on the multiplayer platform. Maybe because people believe that the skill they display is more persistent when others can experience it first hand. And maybe they’re right.

Now I broke free of the shackles of World of Warcraft only a few months ago, but it was hard for me. And I think that had a lot to do with this exact issue. World of Warcraft is a great example of how gamers like to parade their skill around. High level armor sets are so desirable in that game because they show the world how much time and effort you’ve put into the game. It shows your level of dedication. I’m not sure if x-box really knew what they were tapping into when they instituted the “gamer score,” but it really is a powerful incentive. You know it’s funny, when I first got my x-box live gold up and kicking, I thought that I wouldn’t be the type to care about a silly number. But it really feels good to see that number grow as you play through different games. Now I’m still not one to go out of my way to “pad” my gamerscore…. I haven’t stooped so low as to go and rent Avatar or anything, but it still feels nice every time one of those little achievements pops up on the screen… especially when you get it for something you weren’t really trying for.

So competitive gaming seems like its here to stay. Like it or lump it, the multiplayer experience is the way of the future. If you’ve been fighting it up to now, you might as well give up and accept it. The single player game will soon be just a story you’re telling the grandkids around the fireplace….. They’ll smile and laugh at the old man describing antiquated simulated 3d environments and analogue controls… Bank on it!

Financial experts and the art of deception…

    Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

So it has been an interesting couple of months for my wife and I. We have ventured into the dark and fathomless pit that is the realm of home buying! Yes and what a dark and piteous place it is… A horrible land where venom drips from the fangs of predatory real estate agents, straining against their fetters held by the dark lords of mortgage lending, who sit atop their wicked thrones on high in stygian fortresses, cyclopean in their nature!!!
    Ahem…. Yeah so it’s no cake walk…
But it looks as though we’ve found the place…. and we’re going through the motions now. Getting approvals from the bank, puting together a down payment, you know, all that good stuff. And an interesting correlation has appeared… I have discovered a relationship between buying a house… and having a baby! Yes it’s true!!! Now I have not yet produced any spawn of my own, however I have had the opportunity to see these things happen to a few of my friends and co-workers this year and there really is a major similarity. And here it is… No other event in your life will foster so many unsolicited opinions, critiques, advice and supposed fact quoting! Now I’m not trying to say that I don’t appreciate it. After all, those people are just trying to help. I have no doubt that all this information is being offered to me with anything less than good intentions. But the reality is that we have put time and effort into this decision and we both feel that we are prepared for any problems that might arise.
The other thing that has been happening is that I have had the opportunity to benefit from my innate skepticism! I have been “informed” that there are “great opportunities” available in variable mortgage rates from various banking organizations… But as I have learned over the years, nobody tries to push something on you unless they are almost POSITIVE, that doing so will greatly benefit them in the long run. I’m no fool, I am aware that banking, like anything else, is a business… they want my money…. and anything that they offer that looks too good to be true… probably is. This method of thought has been bolstered lately by the fact that I have been recently listening to an audiobook called: “Freakonomics” by Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt. Much of it is old news to me as far as critical and skeptical thinking goes… but it’s a good book. If you aren’t a skeptic, I suggest you pick up this book and give it a whirl…  (Just do your best to overlook the glaring contradictions and over simplified assumptions)  There are a lot of people out there ready to take advantage of others…and being a skeptic could save you from becoming a victim….just remember that there is a fine line between skepticism and cynicism.

    A Kurtzian Tongue Lashing…

So I was listening to Webcomics Weekly #44 and Low and Behold! My question was pulled from the mailbag! “Oh neat!” I thought, “How awesome is that! They’re gonna answer my question!” And they did… after a healthy dose of ridicule from the infamous Mr. Kurtz about how I send him copious emails. That I am prolific, in fact, in my email writings…. Which is true… I deserved that one… However Mr Kurtz I DO know that you wrote a book…. in fact I told you how much I loved it… and how I’ve bought many of your other books to boot…. Don’t worry Scott… I know it was all in good fun… It’s nice to know you’re reading all those emails I send you… and don’t worry there’s plenty more where that came from…. :)

    Just kidding…

    Not An Excuse!

    Friday, August 22nd, 2008

So I was reading Scott’s recent post on the PVP blog about how he was defending Robert Kirkman’s opinion that maybe it was a good idea to use a gig at a company like Marvel or DC as a springboard for your independent career, and first of all I have to agree.  The potential for continued revenue from a project rather then a one time salary is definitely appealing.  But that wasn’t the part of the post that really rang true with me.  It was Scott’s story about how he visited Mike Wieringo who was suffering from back pain so sever he couldn’t sleep in a bed.  Mike apparently couldn’t afford to see a doctor and had no health insurance.  For someone as talented as Mike to be in that kind of a situation is a fucking crime!

The reason this hit me so hard is that I’ve seen similar things happen to people around me to varying degrees.   I’ve been around people who put in a rediculous amount of time and effort into a job that simply isn’t compensating them appropriately for their efforts.  I’ve seen them suffering from extreme fatigue and next to empty bank accounts.  And during most of the conversations with these people someone will inevitably bring up the idea that “well at least you’re doing something you love to do…” and my response is NOOOOO!  Don’t fucking justify that!  Just cause you are working in your chosen field is no excuse to let yourself get fucked over by your employer!  It’s not right.  You worked hard to get where you are and at this point your work has REAL value!  Don’t forget it!

An artist’s work is constantly undervalued.  Do you remember when you were a kid and people around you found out you could draw and how much attention that got?  You remember how people would say “wow I wish I could draw like that?”  Well that doesn’t change as you get older… The vast majority of the world aren’t artists and that makes your skill rare and valuable!  Just like if you can sing or act or whatever.  You spent time and effort refining your skill and is worth something.  People who employ artists are constantly taking advantage of them.  Now don’t get me wrong… that is the way life is.  That’s how a buisness thrives, there are people trying to take advantage of you everyday, but it’s up to you as to how badly the take advantage of you.  You have to get out there and ASK for more, nay DEMAND it.  You have to believe that you’re worth more…. the only one who’s going to look after you like that is yourself.

Don’t let yourself be a victim, be worth more!
